What Would You Give Up?
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
From time to time you hear about “giving up something for Lent.” We live in a world where “my rights” reign supreme.
I’m reminded of the prodigal son’s demand from his father at the beginning of the parable, “Give me my share.” You’ll recall his father graciously gave him his share. It quickly turned into a disaster.
At the heart of “giving up something for Lent” is a heart attitude of humility and deference. My “rights” are laid aside and I submit.
I’m reminded of Paul’s words regarding Jesus, who laid aside His rights, He humbled Himself.
Maybe what we give up for Lent is not chocolate, but our “rights” and live with a humble, giving heart that is not demanding “Give me my share.” Be very careful because God may just give you your share.
