Watch Where You Stand
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
Oft times on my way home from work in the evening, I go past a corner gas station and there will be five to six young men standing and talking together. It is obvious they are hanging out doing nothing in particular at the moment. At other times I’ve also noticed a squad car at this gas station, but apparently not in need of refueling! The officers can be seen joining in the conversation with these young men!
I can’t help but think of Psalm 1 in which the psalmist says in a powerful way that a person will be happiest if they do not stand around with people looking for trouble and creating it. Notice the way the psalmist makes his point. Rather than simply saying, “stay away from those kinds of people,” he teaches the reason for staying away by the way he says it.
He also gives a positive way to deal with the situation. Blessedness, joy, fulfillment, the things people really desire, don’t come from hanging with people who reject God but rather immersing one’s self in the mind of God, in the law of the Lord. God’s environment brings joy and wisdom. Jesus elaborates on this very psalm in His Sermon on the Mount.
