The Significance of Faith
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
In the eleventh chapter of Hebrews we read the names of several Old Testament people of faith. Have you ever thought about what these people actually did? We know the famous ones like Abraham, Moses, and King David. But there were also lesser known ones like Jephthah, Barak, and Samson. These latter three were not exactly pillars of the faith! All of the people listed were flawed, some of them embarrassingly so (the last three named.)
Have you ever wondered why they were listed and someone like Isaiah or Elijah was left out? It seems that God values faith whenever it is exercised, by whomever. As you read on in Hebrews, you discover things didn't turn out great for everyone who exhibited faith. Some died horrible deaths in this life. But faith always looks far beyond this life.
When we step out in faith, be reminded the Lord is well aware of how flawed the rest of our life is and He wants us to live in faith now, at this very moment. Live that way today. The end of the chapter records, “These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. (Why?) God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect (complete).“
