The Face of God
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
You are probably familiar with the well-known benediction, “May the Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” There is a phrase that is somewhat different. “The Lord make his face to shine upon you.” What exactly does that mean? The blessing stays with the same theme in that we have a similar phrase, “The Lord turn his face toward you…”
The image associated with the Lord’s face is one that reminds us of the brilliant glow on Moses’ face as he descended from Mt. Sinai having just received the Ten Commandments. Also associated with this picture is that of a father lifting his little child to the heavens and looking up at the little one with a huge smile of joy and delight on his face, reminding us of God’s love and care for us as His children in every situation.
Psalm 4 picks up this same image (4:6). You may want to read the entirety of Psalm 4.
