The Ascension of Jesus
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
Had we lived in Jesus’ time, tomorrow would be the day Jesus returns to heaven, marking forty days since Easter Sunday. While much is made of the birth of Jesus, and we certainly remember Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and the Resurrection on Easter Sunday, too often the Ascension is largely forgotten in our minds.
This event is essential to our Christian faith. In the Ascension, Jesus bodily ascended to heaven thereby assuring all of us among other things, a bodily, physical resurrection! Jesus’ glorified body after the resurrection had properties different than ours as He moved back and forth between different dimensions during the previous forty days. Think about it. Had He not ascended to heaven, He could not return. His heavenly destination is to be seated at the right hand of God where He continually intercedes on our behalf.
In a secular age of doubt and speculation as regards life after death and what it may or may not look like...if it even exists, Jesus gave believers a certain and perfect picture of the glorious resurrection body. He also told us we’ll have a glorious body like His own. Eternal life is assured, real, and physical with dimensions beyond the four that we live in now.
Is the Ascension significant? Absolutely! Rejoice! He’s coming back in the same way His followers saw Him leave. Read Acts 1:1-11 for a firsthand account.
