Security in the Familiar
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
If we look thoughtfully at an audience regularly addressed by Jesus, we’ll see the scribes, Pharisees, and religious leaders. He spoke of and to them often. Was there an underlying reason?
They had figured out their own way and interpretation of the Law. They knew how it was to be lived out. They had comfort in knowing exactly where the boundaries were. Jesus was pushing them outside of their secure system. He was asking them to adapt and grow in their understanding of the biggest picture. He wanted to mature and grow in faith. They had to be willing to leave the comfortable, the secure, the safe, the known.
Ultimately, only a few were able to do that. The challenge of leaving the safe and secure comes to each of us as God continues the work He’s begun in us.
Where are you being pushed out of your comfort zone today? A growing life of faith is not supposed to be safe. Ask Nicodemus, who was ostracized.
