Reading Between the Lines
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
Have you ever formed an opinion of someone just by watching what they do? Could you tell much about their character, values, or things that were important to them? If you were to “watch” Mary and Joseph, Jesus’ parents, what would you discover?
We know they have at least seven children, with Jesus being the oldest. They were not very wealthy, at least when Jesus was a baby due to the nature of their sacrificial offering at His consecration forty days after He was born (would have been on Feb.2nd).
At every point in Jesus’ life, Mary and Joseph were very observant Jews. Jesus was circumcised and named on the eighth day, He was consecrated on the fortieth day, and they traveled to the Temple for His bar mitzvah prior to His thirteenth birthday.
His parents followed the Law at every point. Apparently His father died at some point prior to His public ministry. His mother faithfully followed Him and was present at His crucifixion.
We can learn a great deal in Scripture by reading between the lines. If someone is watching you and following your life, what are they learning about you today? What are they learning about the Lord? By the way, people are watching you.
