My God Is A Rock
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
God had just delivered David from the hand of King Saul who was trying to kill him. Talk about stress! And it wasn’t just Saul who was chasing David. Saul had his whole army after David. The opening words of this 18th Psalm of David’s are so touching. “I love you, O my Lord, my strength.”
You and I have frequently heard the words used of someone going through a difficult time, “He or she is ‘such a rock.’” Have you noticed how God is referred to as a rock, in Scripture?
For the Israelites, rock, had history. In the wilderness wanderings, the rock was the source of water on more than one occasion. Moses spoke to the rock and water gushed forth, providing water for a million Israelites in the desert! That rock represented Christ. The Rock delivered the people in a time of stress.
There is a marvelous spiritual growing out of this psalm, “My God Is a Rock,” that is worth looking up on Youtube. God is a rock, as the hymn says, “Who trusts in God’s unchanging love, builds on the rock that naught can move.” God is your immovable Rock today.
