Message: Who Will Be Our King? BEAUTY
The Greek understanding of beauty is a far cry from our modern day, corrupt understanding of beauty as those things or images that my eye likes and enjoys. Beauty is found in the combination of truth and goodness. My wife is beautiful when she loves me not because she is 'easy on the eyes', but because her service to me is so good and right, and it is a truth to which I attest; she is beautiful.
In the nativity scene, and textually in Mary's Magnificat, we see the beauty of the incarnation. The incarnation is a good and truth event, and therefore beautiful. While we love the sounds, smells, and bells of Christmas, and we nurture them to feel nostalgic and warm, may we see the deeper beauty of the season in the truth and goodness that comes from Christ's mission, specifically as expressed in Mary's song.
