Advent, a Part of the Whole Story
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
We associate advent with the birth of Christ. But the nativity of Jesus is about much more than a baby being born in very humble circumstances. We understand that this birth gives us a Savior and Lord. It means that in his birth, we must also realize we are recognizing his life, suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension.
In other words, Christmas should be seen as part of a much larger picture than celebrating a baby being visited by shepherds and kings. This little boy is destined to be the Shepherd of his people and the King of all kings. This is why advent itself expands far beyond simply looking forward to the birth of Jesus.
You’ll recall the season begins with the Second Coming of Christ and the final judgment.
As we rejoice in this wonderful season, let us remember to keep the whole picture in mind of God’s plan to restore all of creation.
