A Singing Faith
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
Christianity and the faith of the Israelites in the Old Testament was a singing faith. In OT times, songs were a way of reciting Israel’s history. The first song recorded in Scripture (in Exodus 15) was Miriam’s song celebrating God’s victory and the defeat of the Egyptian army in the Red Sea. Songs were to remind people of who God was and is and what He has done and what He promises to do in the future.
Through the years, all kinds of songs sought to express those truths. During the Advent season and during Christmastide, we have the opportunity to sing many of the wonderful Christmas carols which, like songs in the Bible, reflect on our great God and what He’s done in the past in reaching out to us.
Our theology is sung as well as read which is why song texts are so important. Advent is a season of great reminding as well as rejoicing!
