It's the Law!
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
What do you think of when you hear the word Torah? What is Torah? Torah is the first five books of the Older Testament, the Pentateuch, the books of Moses’ writing. They are also referred to in Scripture as the LAW.
Some of us may think of the LAW as hard rules to be obeyed and if we mess up, (and we will), there’s punishment. Therefore, Torah equals laws or rules to be followed or punishment will follow. That perspective is not the Jewish mindset nor is it God’s concerning Torah.
As Calvin Seerveld has said, we’d be better off thinking of the LAW as “an upholding embrace, God’s written hedge to protect us from wasting our lifetime by stumbling off the Way of blessing.”
Psalm 1 has a different character when we begin to see the real point of the writer. Read the Psalm today and we’ll begin working our way through it in the next Meditation.
