Have you ever been insulted, made fun of, lied about? We all have to answer “yes.” In spite of the claim that “sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me,” we know from reality that that is not true. Names hurt. Insults hurt. Lying hurts. Persecution hurts.
Jesus talks about persecution for righteousness sake. It is no surprise that Christianity is under attack. There is more persecution of Christians today worldwide, than in any previous time in history.
Are there times when you have held back from speaking the truth in a social situation because you knew that it would not be politically correct and you didn't want to be embarrassed or attacked? Jesus offers encouragement and perspective in saying that other believers before you have suffered the same and that there is eternal reward in heaven.
So rejoice in the biggest picture and remember, we are citizens of another world that will never end!
