Hurricane Matthew: How to Help
This morning, Orlando woke to the sunshine that often accompanies the retreat of a hurricane in Florida. Many experienced power outages, downed trees and property, but most of us are breathing sighs of relief that our community escaped the very worst of Hurricane Matthew.
Even as we are grateful to God for the eastward move of Hurricane Matthew, sparing many of us in Central Florida the very worst of the storm, we are painfully aware of the realities for many other who were in a more direct path.
"You, God, have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat. For the breath of the ruthless is like a storm driving against a wall." - Isaiah 25:4
How to help those affected by Hurricane Matthew:
- Pray. Prayer is not a last resort. It is our first movement of the heart, to lift up the people of Haiti, Cuba, the Bahamas, coastal Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. (Did we miss someone? Add them!) Remember, we want to do more than just post about prayer, or talk about it. Let's make time to do it!
Many of our mission partners were affected, but all have reported that they are safe. (Praise God!) Here's who to pray for specifically, as they work to rebuild:
Haiti: Deux Mains and Rebuild Globally, Julie Colombino and her team. Dominican Republic: Mission Emanuel, Jim Sweeny, Jack Larsen and Javier de la Cruz. Bahamas: The Mission Society, Merry and Lane Grayson on Long Island. St Andrews Kirk (EPC): Rev Bryn Mac Phail in Nassau; Rev. Gabe Swing with Caribbean Youth Network and Kirk of the Pines (EPC) in Marsh Harbor.
- Take action. One of the ways our faith in God is shown to the world is by our willingness to act on behalf of those in need. Contribute to the relief and rebuilding efforts below:
