How God Enters Speech
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
How many times have you heard “I swear to God, it’s true?" The use of God’s name occurs all too often in casual and meaningless ways.
In Jesus’ words “Do not swear at all; either by heaven, for it is God’s throne, or by the earth, for it is His footstool...simply let your ‘yes’ be ‘yes’ and your ‘no,’ ‘no’ – anything beyond this comes from the evil one.”
He is not so much talking about taking the Lord’s name in vain, as He is casually using the Lord’s name to invoke more authority in what we say. If you have no personal integrity, making an appeal to God isn't going to change anything.
I think of some of the governmental hearings. If there is not trust and integrity in the person speaking, no amount of appeal to an oath taking God’s name is going to make that person more credible.
Be careful of your speech this day. Your heart matters more than your words.
