How's Your Hearing?
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
We are all familiar with the call of Moses, the burning bush, take off your shoes you are on holy ground...the whole story. We also remember how Moses argued with God that he was not capable or ready for such a task as leading a million or more people out of Egypt.
Think about it–Moses had quietly been attending to sheep. He was a shepherd peacefully minding his own business. I don’t have a sense that he wanted to do something different or that he was “working his way up to anything!” From God’s perspective he was being trained. From Moses’ perspective he was tending sheep. It is not accident that God calls us “the sheep of His pasture.”
As a farm boy who grew up with sheep all around our farm, the analogy is a good one. Sheep are very stubborn, dumb, and have poor eye sight. They can’t see very far ahead and as a result, are fearful. In contrast, their hearing is outstanding. They do know their master’s voice.
Moses had been trained by God using sheep. Now God called him to shepherd “human sheep.” For what are you being trained by the Lord? No excuses! The sheep know the shepherd’s voice. How’s your hearing?
