Christ Surrounds Us
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
“You hem me in–behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.”
This verse reminds me of a portion of the hymn to St. Patrick (c.430AD). “Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me; Christ to comfort and restore me; Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.”
David goes on to say in the psalm that “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain."
One of the glories of the Christian faith is that our God is very present with His people. We do not have to work ourselves into some “spiritual state” to communicate with God. Christ surrounds our life every single day. This reality is “too wonderful,” yet true!
