Belong Precedes Believe
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
In the previous meditation we mentioned the woman, Rahab. If we follow her story we discover she married the Israelite, Salmon. They had a son, Boaz. We read of him in the book of Ruth.
You’ll remember that Ruth was also an outsider to the Jewish faith. She came from the Moabites, a people at serious odds with Israel. But during her life, Ruth came across the God of Israel and committed herself to following Yahweh.
She met Boaz in a beautiful love story and they were married. They had a son, Obed, who later had a son, Jesse, who had seven sons, among them was to be King David, Israel’s greatest King.
Ruth was clearly an outsider, yet grace and love was extended to her and, like Rahab, she also became part of the lineage of Jesus.
Who in your world is “on the fringe,” on the outside? Like Naomi, Ruth’s mother-in-law, can you extend love and encouragement to them? Belonging is the first step toward believing. Who can you help “belong?"
