This summer I had a chance to drive a team of horses for a short way. What I found out was that they are always hitched together in the same way. The horse on the right, is always the horse on the right, and the horse on the left side of the team, is always on the left side. Furthermore, one of the two horses is the leader and the other takes the cues from the leader of the team. They respond to simple commands, “Gee” or “Haw” determines a right or left turn. The lead horse listens to one voice, responds, and the other horse on the team follows. Two “lead horses” would never make a functioning team. There cannot be two masters.
Jesus reminds us you cannot serve God and money. One of the two will prevail, otherwise, chaos! The world around us is evidence of which is the best route to follow.
