The Incarnation of Jesus Christ
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
One of the great themes of Advent is the incarnation of Jesus Christ. In God becoming fully human while at the same time remaining fully God, (very God of very God as it says in the Nicene Creed), God gained the victory over sin, death, and the powers of evil.
J.S. Bach wrote a magnificent Christmas Oratorio, reflecting this story. One of the chorales has the perfect words for our times. “Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light, and usher in the morning; you shepherds, shrink not with affright, but hear the angel’s warning. This Child now weak in infancy, our confidence and joy shall be, the power of Satan breaking, our peace eternal making.”
Can it be said any more clearly? The power of the prince of this world is broken. No wonder the devil tried to kill the baby Jesus.
