Pigs and Dogs
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
Having grown up on a farm, we had both pigs and a dog. Jesus told the crowd on the hillside not to give dogs what is sacred and not to throw pearls to pigs.
Dogs will eat about anything. I’m not sure they have very sensitive taste buds. Have you ever smelled dog food! The same point is made another way with the illustration of pigs. Neither pigs nor dogs have “eating manners.” Pigs let you know when they are hungry. They squeal. They push and shove. Their food is actually called “slop.” You “slop the hogs” which is also the way they eat! If pigs don’t get their food when they want, they can be very, very mean, frighteningly so. They can actually attack a person.
Like pigs and dogs, whose sole interest is in themselves when it comes to food, some people have no interest in sacred things or the gospel at all. The gospel is the pearl in this illustration and we are admonished not to give it when there is total disregard for the things of God.
Pray today for “dogs” and “pigs” that their hearts will be softened into being willing to hear the good news. Some of them may be around you.
