Most of us know the shortest verse in the Bible, “Jesus wept.” As we enter Holy Week today, I want to look back a bit at the raising of Lazarus story. That story contains this shortest of verses.
Why did Jesus weep? Was He weeping because of the sorrow Mary and Martha were experiencing? The fellow mourners assumed He was weeping for the loss of His dear friend. The word used for Jesus’ weeping is used only one time in the New Testament and it is here. The word means a “soft, subdued” weeping.
Most likely Jesus is weeping because He knows He’s coming to the end of His time on earth and these dear friends still don’t get who He is and what He has come to do.
In this coming week of singular focus, pray that many, many people around the world will understand and personally experience the forgiveness of the risen Lord and commit to following Him the rest of their days.
