Five Hundred Witnesses
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
As we are going through this third week in Easter, (the early Christians observed Easter as a fifty day season not as a one day event), we are aware that Jesus appeared many times during these days in His resurrected body.
A couple of weeks ago Dr. Swanson mentioned in a sermon the importance of eye witnesses to any event. A testimony was given in writing that Jesus appeared to more than 500 people at one time.
Five hundred people seeing the same thing, at the same time, is very solid evidence. One or two or three people might exaggerate, or conspire; not so with five hundred people. The five hundred act as a monitor to those who would add or magnify or augment the truth.
By the fact that five hundred people would come to the same conclusion, you have a great certainty of authenticity and accuracy. Jesus was alive. Jesus had defeated death. And all these people saw Him and undoubtedly talked with Him.
God is always interested in reality. Do you see the wisdom of having Jesus dwell on earth a while after His resurrection? Ordinary normal people got to spend time with Him and interact with Him before He returned to heaven.
In going to heaven, He worked it out so we can still spend time and interact with Him each day, including this one.
