The only time some of us ever fast is when we are preparing for a blood test of some sort. Yet, Jesus speaks this phrase, “when you fast,” not “if you fast” in His Sermon on the Mount.
Like prayer or giving to those in need, He reminds us to do it quietly, not making a production of it. It is to be anonymous.
One of the benefits of fasting is spiritual clarity and a sharpening of the spirit. It can enable one to remove some of the clutter of life and thought as we long for the Spirit and humble ourselves before God.
It is one of the spiritual disciplines of life as real today as it was in Jesus’ day. Might this practice be something to incorporate into your spiritual walk with the Lord? Just a thought─
