Fasting During Lent
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
Did you ever notice that Jesus said, “when you fast…” not, “if you fast?"
Fasting was a common practice throughout the Scriptures. The roots of the 40 days of this season are found in Jesus’ 40-day fast in the wilderness at the outset of His public ministry. It is one of the spiritual disciplines practiced regularly by many believers throughout history.
If health permits, might I suggest a fast of some sort during this Lenten season? Mark one day a week for fasting. There are various kinds and degrees of fasting. One of the key purposes is to sharpen our spiritual listening skills in hearing God’s voice.
Take the time you would have spent eating and replace the physical food with the spiritual nourishment in the Scriptures. Feed on God’s word. Let God be your guide in shaping your spiritual journey these next days leading up to Easter Sunday. Resurrection Sunday will never be the same!
