Bibles in Worship
by Dr. Dan Sharp, Minister of Worship
The reading of scripture in worship has been central from the first days of Christian worship.
We read in II Peter 3:16 that Paul’s letters, (Galatians, Ephesians, and so forth) were being read regularly in the early church already. Of course the Psalms and the rest of the Old Testament were read as well.
The people listened as the scriptures were read. They had no books. There was the Torah in the synagogues and Paul’s letters. Copies of the scriptures were rare and continued to be so for hundreds of years since they were painstakingly, copied by hand.
Then in the 1400’s came the printing press which revolutionized the world. It made it possible for anyone to have a Bible, a Bible of their own that they could take to worship!
We want to encourage you to spend time in the Scriptures each day and be sure to bring your Bible with you to worship each week as we open God’s word.
