2019 Class of Elders & Deacons
We'd like to introduce you to nominees for the 2019 Class of Elders & Deacons slated to be voted on during our Congregational Meeting on September 18 (during the 11am worship service).
Joseph “Joe” L. Amos, Jr. is a lifelong Orlando resident and lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church of Orlando. He was baptized at FPC as an infant, confirmed as a teen, married his wife (Kim) in the Sanctuary, and is raising his family there. Through the years, he has worked and led in lay ministry, taught youth and adult Sunday School classes, and previously served as an elder in 2002 - 2004. Joe and his wife have three children (Lauren age 21; Jackson age 19; and Ryan age 12) - all of whom are also members of FPCO. Joe is an attorney, specializing in civil trial law, and is also a certified circuit court mediator.
Thomas was raised in Carmel, NY and graduated from Pace University with a Bachelor's degree in Finance. In 1991, he moved to Orlando, FL and accepted a position at Merrill Lynch where he serves today as a First Vice President and partner of the SE Wealth Management Group. Thomas currently serves on the Boards of The Gathering, Four12, The Christ School and Edgewood Children's Ranch. Thomas is married to Julie and they have two beautiful children together, Cole and Chloe.
Chris Morgan has been a member of FPCO for 18 years. He and his wife, Dianna, are parents of Blair Morgan and Bo Morgan and his wife Lauren and grandparents to Carter Grace Morgan and Caroline Kay Morgan. Chris is a current elder and has previously served on the Facilities Planning Committee and the Debt-reduction Subcommittee. Chris is a partner with Goehring & Morgan Construction.
William “Billy” Palmer was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. In 1997 his family moved to Orlando where he would finish high school at Lake Highland Preparatory School. Billy received an athletic scholarship to play football for the University of Notre Dame and after graduating, returned to Orlando and married his high school sweetheart, Ashley Fox Palmer (at FPCO). Billy joined J. Rolfe Davis as an insurance broker and about the same time formally joined FPCO as a member. Today Billy and Ashley have three boys (Luke (8), Charlie (6), and Wyatt (2) – all baptized at FPCO) and Billy leads a region for BB&T Insurance Services (successor of J. Rolfe Davis). Billy has participated in several Bible studies through the church and was involved with the capital campaign in 2015.
Dyann Van Dam
A member of First Presbyterian Church since 1992. Dyann and her husband, Joe, have been married 24 wonderful years. She has two sons: Will, who is a Junior at West Orange High School and Bradley, who is a Freshman at Central Florida Christian Academy. A graduate of University of Central Florida and Rollins College, Dyann is an Industrial Engineer and works as Manager at Walt Disney World. Dyann has served as a Coach with Jobs Partnership. She has been blessed to be a member of a Life Community Group (whom she considers family) for more than five years. Dyann is honored to be called to serve her beloved church and Lord as Elder.
Trey, his wife Carrie and three children Brandon (15), Bailey (14) and Bella (9) have attended First Pres. For six years. Trey is a native of Central Florida and grew up north of Orlando in Apopka. Trey served in the United States Air Force and then upon returning home entered the banking industry for eight years. He then left banking in 2011 and is President of Equinox Development Properties, Inc. He has a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Central Florida, an undergraduate degree from Bellevue University and graduate of the Florida School of Banking at the University of Florida.
Erin resides in Maitland with her husband of 14 years, Scott. Together they have three children - an eight-year-old daughter, five-year-old daughter, and three-year-old son. Erin and Scott joined FPCO shortly after their marriage upon invites from her college advisor and sorority house mother. As a member, Erin has served on the WDS advisory and executive committees; flower ministry team; SHINE volunteer; and study leader through WE.
Gregory “Greg” H. Burden was born in Atlanta Georgia in 1964 his family relocated to Orlando in 1979 and he graduated from Boone High School in 1983. Greg attended the University of Florida on a football scholarship where he earned two letters and has a business degree from Florida Southern University. He has been involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes since high school and currently serves on the FCA Central Florida Board. Greg has been married to his lovely wife Beth Anne for 26 years and has two children Garrett (22) working here in Orlando and Sarah Beth (20) a Junior at Samford University. He has spent the majority of his life in sales management and leadership development and currently works for VaxCare, an Orlando based technology company focused on immunization solutions. Greg has been a member of FPCO since 2010 and has extensive family ties to the church with his brother and his entire family being members and attending for over 30 years. He looks forward to being more involved in serving at the church and helping others in times of need and guidance.
Jessica Burden is a lifelong resident of Orlando and grew up in College Park. She attended Florida State University and returned to Orlando upon graduation. Jessica became a member of FPCO after marrying her husband David 10 years ago. They have three children together: Henry, Mary Alice and George. At FPCO Jessica has enjoyed participating on the prayer team, volunteering with FOUR12, leading women's Bible study groups and holding leadership positions at Weekday School.
Shannon Compere has been involved at First Pres for the past three years. She and her husband Marc have been table hosts for the First Connections class which was significant for them connecting in at FPCO. Shannon has worked with Cru for the past 25 years and currently serves on the campus executive team with a focus on leadership development. She has been married to Marc for 14 years and together they have traveled to 14 countries.
Nicole “Nikki” Ickes is wife to Gregg Ickes, mom to Grant (9) and Madison (6), a lifelong disciple of Jesus, and an enthusiast for God's Word, life's "journey" and authenticity in people. Nikki feels particularly called in teaching, mentoring, and discipling women, and is most "alive" when encouraging and inspiring others to dig deeper with their Lord and Savior. Following graduation from Florida State University, Nikki worked at Florida Hospital for over 10 years in the NICU as a Speech-Language Pathologist assisting newborns with feeding-related issues. In recent years, Nikki has passionately served our church and community through continued involvement with Women Engaged, BECOMING magazine, Bible Study Leadership, Four12 and Weekday School ministries.
Steve Judy is a native Floridian, born and raised in central Florida. He lives in south Orlando with his wife, Melanie, and his 11-year-old daughter, Kendall Grace. He works for a local non-profit, UCP of Central Florida, which provides services to children with special needs. He and his family have been active at FPCO participating in worship/discipleship classes, Shine ministry and a Life Group.
Kim Kemper was born and raised in Orlando, FL. He was brought up in the Baptist Church and later became a Presbyterian after meeting the love of his life, now his wife of 35 years. Being blessed with a wonderful wife, two daughters and three grandchildren + one more on the way, I believe God’s love shows through them all. After many years in the Dental field, Kim retired early to help take care of his father-in-law, followed by his mother-in- law and both of his parents.
Susan “Susie” Grace Appleby Kemper came to FPCO when she was eight years old. She grew up in a choir family where she, both parents, and two sisters sang in the choirs and she has been singing praises to the Lord in the choir ever since. Susie married Kim Kemper in 1981 and they were blessed with two daughters, and now three grandchildren. She worked for 35 years as a K-5 Varying Exceptionalities Resource Teacher, retiring in 2014 to help take care of her grandchildren. Susie has developed a passion for Bible Study as she has participated in Women’s Bible Studies since 2006, and is in the Servants in the Son sunday school class, growing ever stronger in her faith and relationship with the Lord.
Dianne and husband, David, moved to Orlando from Knoxville, TN in 1985. The Macintires joined FPCO in 1988, have attended the BASICS Class since then, and both serve on the Usher/Greeter Team at the early worship service. Dianne previously worked for DaimlerChrysler Motors at the Southeast Business Center in Orlando and is now enjoying her retirement.
Suzi Teel is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, husband of 42 years, Jim Teel. Lived in Columbus, Mississippi for 23 years, moving to Winter Park, Florida in 1998. At First Pres, is in WE, an evening couples small group and an usher. Mother of 4 grown sons and has 5 grandchildren. Grateful as well for this First Pres church family.
Richard van Gelder
Richard was born and raised in Orlando, a self-proclaimed College-Parkadonian. Blessed with a wonderful wife Dale, two wonderful children Karl and Katherine, and their dog Charlie. As a child he was raised in a traditional Jewish family, spent many adult years seeking Christ and was Baptized in 2010 at FPCO. Richard enjoys meeting and greeting both new people and Church members, serving as an usher for the early Sunday service. He and his wife have attended the Crossroads Sunday school class for many years. Sunday is his favorite day of the week, where he finds solace in worship, learning from his elders and spending time with his Church family. Richard is an outgoing servant of God, seeking to help out where he can.
