February Clothing Drive!
We need your help outfitting each of our men enrolled in the Mercy Drive Spring Class with a coordinated set of interview clothes, along with shoes/socks/belts/ties and a hygiene kit! First Class Cleaners has agreed to receive donations of gently used men’s business attire at their network of 20 stores in Central Florida. In addition, they have agreed to do all of the alterations and dry clean all of the clothes. You don't even need to bring the clothes on hangers. Each man will receive the complete interview outfit in time for the Interviewing class and the private Job Fair! Here’s what is needed:
Suits
Dress Shirts (cotton, button-down)
Ties
Belts
Dress Pants & Khaki Slacks
Blazers
Dress Shoes
Donations may be dropped-off at any of the First Class Cleaners locations in Central Florida.
First Class Cleaner's Winter Park Location is at 1011 Orange Ave. near the intersection of Minnesota and Denning. (407.447.6011).
The Spring 2010 Jobs Parntership Class will run February 2 through May 4. Click here for a full class schedule.
Would you like to be part of a special partnership we’re forging between First Presbyterian Church and Heart of Mercy Church? Nearly 80 volunteers are needed to serve as mentors, job counselors and hospitality team members in this meaningful ministry that involves community transformation. It's a unique collaboration called the Mercy Corridor Initiative, at the core of which is a 12-week Life & Work job readiness class for those unemployed or underemployed. Taught by local pastors and business leaders, it will truly prepare participants for the world of work.
Could you be a...
Job Counselor? Build a relationship with two to three students by attending the WORK Class, 12 Thursday evenings (you’ll assist students as they build their employability through completing a career assessment, preparing a resume, building interview skills and job search techniques).
Mentor? Build a relationship with two to three students by attending the LIFE Class, 12 Tuesday evenings (you’ll assist students as they apply the Biblical principles they’re learning by facilitating discussion and by sharing your personal and professional experiences).
Business Partner? Interview qualified graduates to fill an open position at your company.
Refreshment Provider? Bring a light supper for our class members and volunteers before one of the sessions. For many this is the only substantial meal they get, and it helps them to be able to focus on the content and activities in the class.
Resume/Interview Coach? Attend resume and interview classes (you’ll work with students as they write their resume /or practice their interviewing skills).
Administration team member? Help with materials and class agendas. Check students in, give them their name tags, and any necessary paperwork for the night.
Hospitality team member? Set up and serve food, providing a welcoming presence for the students.
Financial Partner? Individually – or with your small group or Sunday School class – make a one-time gift to help a student with rent, utilities, childcare needs, etc. to help them stay in the program and make the necessary changes in their lives to gain self sufficiency.
